AMD and Sony Talk About the Future of Gaming Graphics and Gameplay Technology

AMD and Sony have released a new video where AMD Computer and Graphics Group SVP and GM Jack Huynh and PS5 and PS5 Pro Lead Architect Mark Cerny talk about the latest developments from Project Amethyst and the Future of Play, the collaboration between the two companies focused on developing machine-learning based technology for graphics and gameplay.

In the video, Huynh and Cerny discuss three gaming technology breakthroughs that may benefit the game industry and game development via advances in performance, immersion, and efficiency. Here’s a short description of each of those technologies:

  • Neural Arrays: A collection of compute units configured to share and process data to work together like a single AI engine.
  • Radiance Cores: New dedicated hardware designed to deliver high performance real-time ray tracing and path tracing.
  • Universal Compression: A new system that evaluates and compresses all available data within the GPU to dramatically reduce memory bandwidth usage.

Some of these technologies may make their way to Sony’s next generation consoles, such as the PlayStation 6 or another unannounced console, or be utilized by the company’s first-party or partnered third-party game development studios. Check out the video below:
